Mesothelioma Caused by Asbestos
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops from transformed cells originating in the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body, primarily the lungs. Mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.
While most individuals who have mesothelioma have worked in jobs that have put them into direct contact with asbestos or have inhaled asbestos fibers, others may have also developed it by being in contact with that individual; for example, washing clothes along with those of an individual who works with asbestos.
While there is currently no link between mesothelioma and tobacco smoking, smoking can increase the risk of asbestos related cancers.
Some of the symptoms of mesothelioma range from unexplained weight loss, pain in the chest wall and shortness of breath stemming from pleural effusion (defined as a buildup of fluid between the lung and chest wall).
